Love at First Bite

Love at First Bite

How silently the rain comes down in the growing darkness
as the day dies and the sky gives off gold, salmon and
red in farewell to the sinking sun; I long to embrace
the stillness of the night finding solace in the
blackness where all things look alike
my friend’s blind mother use to
touch my face with both
her hands to see who
I was and I wonder
who is kissing
whom in the
dark
but hark
here comes
the sound of trance
like burning leaves and
high winds and suddenly
everything is seen in a silvery
light and I can see through you again
and watch your beating heart inside you
as I glide through furniture and walls out into
the dark ancient city across the ocean which once
was home, I hover over it like a kite calling her name
in my mind and wondering where she has gone or why
she doesn’t come to meet me in the spaces in between
while I wait for dawn to take from me this healing and to
return me to the known we cling to for its familiarity shunning
our greater identity and parts unknown we clone our ignorance and
sell it to those who sleep like rocks without even dreams tonight in Rome
